DevOps engineer is one of the most critical roles in the modern IT world. In recent years, questions such as who is a DevOps engineer, what is DevOps and how to get started in the DevOps field have been among the most searched topics. In this article, we will explain in detail what a DevOps engineer does in a real work environment, what technical and analytical skills he has, and in what direction this field is developing in 2026.

The concept of DevOps was formed from the combination of the words 'Development' and 'Operations'. However, DevOps is not just a collaboration between two teams. DevOps is a culture, process and automation approach. The goal is to deliver software to the production environment faster, more securely and stably.

In the traditional model, programmers wrote code, and system administrators deployed that code to the server. This model resulted in communication problems, deployment delays and frequent system errors. The DevOps approach uses automation, CI/CD and continuous monitoring mechanisms to overcome these problems.

One of the main tasks of a DevOps engineer is to build a CI/CD pipeline. Through Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment processes, the code is automatically tested, built, and transferred to the production environment after each change. This reduces human intervention and minimizes the risk of errors.

Docker containerization is one of the daily tools of the DevOps engineer. Putting the application into a container along with all its dependencies eliminates problems arising from environment differences. Kubernetes orchestrates these containers, creating auto-scaling, rolling update, and high availability capabilities.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC) is one of the most important skills of the DevOps engineer. With tools such as Terraform and Ansible, servers and cloud infrastructure are managed through code. This approach provides version control, replication, and disaster recovery capabilities.

The DevOps engineer also builds monitoring and observability systems. System performance, error rates, and resource usage are monitored with tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, and others. Alert systems allow for timely detection of problems.

Knowledge of the Linux operating system, Git version control system, Docker, Kubernetes, networking, and cloud platforms is essential to become a DevOps engineer. In addition, problem-solving skills and systems thinking are key to success in this field.

The salary of a DevOps engineer varies depending on the market and experience. In Azerbaijan, a junior DevOps engineer can earn between 1500-2500 AZN, a mid-level one between 3000-5000 AZN, and a senior one can earn a higher salary. Remote opportunities increase these figures even more.

In 2026, directions such as GitOps, DevSecOps, and Platform Engineering will come to the fore in the field of DevOps. Artificial intelligence has also begun to be used in the optimization of CI/CD processes.
As a result, a DevOps engineer is not just a server administrator. He is an engineer who designs systems, builds automation, and ensures the stable operation of software.
